Hamlett had tried out for the Saints earlier in the month. He originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars. After being waived by Jacksonville, he spent one week on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad.

Hamlett played at Oregon State with Saints receiver Brandin Cooks and defensive end Obum Gwacham.
