Player Summary:
Fentrell Cypress II is a 5th-year junior CB with two seasons of starting experience. Transferred to Florida State from Virginia prior to the 2023 season. Based on his 2022 film, he typically aligned as the field CB in Virginia’s defensive scheme that utilized both man and zone concepts, often Cover 3. Possesses good height and marginal weight with long arms. Exceptional athleticism that helps him win in numerous areas. In man coverage, understands when his cushion is broken, and opens up with considerable hip fluidity. In zone coverage, opens up and drops to his zone with great lateral agility while keeping his eyes on the quarterback. Solid mental processing ability to recognize threats to his area, especially when covering a deep zone. Leverages his zone well and will escort and deliver targets in his zone to the next defender. Impressive transition quickness when breaking downhill. Tremendous ball skills, and utilizes his long arms to get his hands in the way of passes with good timing. A physical tackler with proper form to bring down ball carriers in space. Excellent in run support; shows a desire to make an impact, will constrict running lanes, and will tackle the ball carrier with proper form. Shows some problems in man coverage that must be fixed. Too often loses his leverage in man coverage allowing for easy receptions. When receivers make a sharp break, has a tendency to drift downfield rather than get back to the hip of the receiver. Looks back for the ball when out-of-phase with the receiver; must develop better eye discipline. Needs a more physical jam in off-man and as an underneath defender in zone. Displays marginal ability to shed blocks vs. receivers on screens and run plays. If he can fix his deficiencies in man coverage, he has the potential to be a special player.
Scheme Fit:
Translates best as a CB in a zone-heavy scheme at the next level, specifically in schemes that ask him to take away a deep zone in the passing game.
Power Statement:
CB with long arms who excels in zone coverage with notable athleticism, solid mental processing ability, and exceptional ball skills, matched with a desire to make an impact against the run where he will bring down ball carriers with proper tackling form. Has some fixable deficiencies in man coverage that must be ironed out, and must find ways to shed blocks against receivers.
