Football is about giving back, what is the coolest thing you have done off the field?
Every season at Central & Wyoming there are days when we host camps for kids. Usually, after the camp we get to hang out with these kids and give them gear. It always brings me joy to see how much kids appreciate the sport of football. It has made me want to continue to help and give back through the sport I love.
What was the hardest college class you ever had to take?
Shakespearean Literature
Where are you from?
Seattle, Washington
Who is your role model, and why?
My brother Alex because he is the hardest working man I know. He has taught me through his actions what it takes to be a man. Without his ambitious demeanor & loving personality, I probably wouldn’t be here to even answer this interview.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
Yes, I participated in Track & Wrestling
Did you play any other positions in football?
Middle linebacker as a kid but my heart grew towards the defensive line.
At your position, what separates you from others?
Quickness, leverage and my understanding of offensive schemes. Understanding offensive schemes slows down the game tremendously for me when I know what play they’re going to run before the ball is snapped. I am also very optimistic and focused. If I have a bad play, I let it go and move on to the next play. I live by the two D’s tattooed on my wrists, dedication and discipline. This shows through being coachable and my actions off the field.
When you are breaking down film, what do you look for?
I look for tendencies on the offensive line & their stances determining if they are going to run block or pass protect. I also try to find where the quarterback likes to escape if he’s under pressure. Lastly, I watch film on their most ran plays from every personnel they’ve lined up in.
Who was the toughest player you ever faced?
Weston Richburg who is currently the starting center for the New York Giants.
If you could compare your play to one player in the NFL who would it be and why?
Brandon Mebane because I am violent at the point of attack and a gap filler for my linebackers.
What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?
My mom passed away when I was a junior in high school and I wasn’t doing very well in my classes. Her dream for me was to go to college and to graduate. As of now I am on track to graduate and fulfilling the dream my mom & I shared.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Yes. The night before a game I like to visualize myself playing in the game & only see myself doing great things. On game day, everything that has bothered me or worried me throughout the week is now non existent. Game day, I am only focused on dominating and being disruptive in the trenches.
What is your biggest strength?
Quickness, violent hands, optimism & a mature understating of the game.
What is your biggest weakness?
I am my biggest critique.
If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?
I know my height at this position may throw you off but if my heart had a height it would be limitless. I’ve been through so much adversity in my life and I have never quit. I have never backed down from a challenge or walked away from an obstacle in my way. Growing up I had to prove myself all the time & still I do today. I am not ready to give up football. Give me a chance to prove my worth, and if it doesn’t workout at least I can walk away from this sport knowing I gave it my all.
Who was your favorite player and/or NFL team growing up?
Ladanian Tomlinson, because his elusiveness and vision was matched by none. Growing up I was a San Diego fan but when Ladanian Tomlinson retired, I fell in love with the Seahawks and their aggressive defense.
If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive, who would you choose?
My mom, my grandma & President Obama
What will be the first big item you buy once you are in the NFL?
Buy my brother Alex and his family a bigger house & save the rest.
