Super Regional Combine is this weekend in Detroit; A few sleepers to keep an eye on

There are many critics when it comes to the NFL’s regional combines which are events held for kids that are out of college and want an opportunity to play in the highest football league in the world.  Many talk bad about the regional combines, because the NFL charges a few to have these players work out and if the players pass the work outs they move on to the Super Regional Combine.  All these players are scouted by NFL scouts, former NFL scouts and former NFL personnel.  So to be honest, if you are from a small school and you go to this regional combine, it could be way bigger than your pro day.  All these combine numbers are entered into the NFL’s scouting database, and teams can look at the numbers any time they want.  That is a huge blessing if you have 3 to 5 scouts show up at your pro day, because the more eyes you have on you the better.

Well I talked to scouts that gave me a list of guys to keep an eye on this week in Detroit.  Some of these players are sleepers in the 2014 NFL Draft, and some have been out of the league for a year or two.

One scout told me to keep an eye on former Troy receiver Jamel Johnson who transferred to Alabama State last year.  Johnson is a big wide out at 6’3 and 220 pounds.  He put up very impressive numbers and he is only a junior.  He left for the NFL because he felt he could make it to the next level. Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 220-pounder, was the Hornets’ third-leading receiver in 2013. The Montgomery native caught 28 passes for 328 yards and five touchdowns.  I was told this kid could end up being a late round draft pick, so remember to keep an eye on Johnson.

Some other players that really impressed the scouts were:

Logan Kilgore – QB – Middle Tennessee State – I was told he might be the best quarterback prospect out of all the combines. The kid has a very good arm, is athletic and is a scrappy player.  He is not the biggest kid, but I was told he looked very good in his drills.  In his college career he threw for 7849 yards, connecting on 53 touchdowns, throwing 36 interceptions. Kilgore is 6’3 and weighed in at 212 pounds.  He still had a very solid regional combine.

Denzell Jones – WR – Central Connecticut – The 6’5 wide out turned quite a bit of heads at the regional combine, catching everything thrown his way and putting up very impressive numbers.  Jones is considered a priority free agent right now, but could turn enough heads this weekend that a team considers him a draft pick. 

Garrett Waggoner – S – Dartmouth – This white boy is no joke, the kid jumps out the gym, hits hard, and has great hands.  Waggoner blew up the regional combine and had many heads spinning. Two different scouts told me to watch out for this kid.

Kevin Van Voris/David Van Voris – Kickers – West Texas A&M/Adams State – These brothers might be the best known secret in the NFL.  Both have a powerful leg.  David graduated last year from Adams State and is a very solid all around specialist. Kevin on the other hand is a boomer, the kid can nail long field goals in his sleep.  Both of these guys should be in a camp somewhere.

Justin Wilson – WR – Delaware State – JW played on the Green Bay Packers last season but earned a spot at the Super Regional Combine.  This speedster is a former Diamond in the Rough. He is from track family and he has been working on his routes.  This kid is a sleeper and can get signed as early as Sunday if a team wants him.  He should land on a team.

Lonnie Outlaw Jr. – WR – Miles College – Lonnie is another 6’5 wide out that has speed.  He tore up the UAB pro day this year and which saw his stock continue to rise.  Teams are beginning to show interest and it is real interest. 

Shea Allard – OL – Delaware – Shea Allard has been out of college since 2012, but this kid has never gave up his goal to make the NFL.  He has had several workouts but he has not landed.  He has been working harder than any player in college, and it showed.  I was told by five different scouts that this kid should be signed after the Regional Combine.  Just look at this video, you will have a better understanding of NOT QUITING!
