Should the Lions fire Jim Schwartz? I would fire the GM and hire Alonzo Highsmith
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday on NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” that Schwartz is unlikely to keep his coaching job if the Lions miss the postseason, according to team sources.
Rapoport said the internal belief is that the Lions have enough talent on a roster that includes a franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford, the game’s top wide receiver in Calvin Johnson and a gifted defensive line led by Ndamukong Suh.
Schwartz is nonplussed by any speculation on his future.
“There are negative voices all over this business,” Schwartz told NFL Media columnist Michael Silver. “Those same voices told me I was committing career suicide when I took the Lions job, that it was unfixable and the worst in the NFL.
“There’s too much for me to be positive about to buy into the negativity,” he added. “I have three games for an NFC North title. I’m going to try to win them.”
Rapoport even stated that Martin Mayhew could also be out as the GM. If that is the case, the Lions need to look for a good talent evaluator such as Alonzo Highsmith of the Green Bay Packers. I still don’t believe that Schwartz should be fired. He is not the one drafting, he is trying to put the pieces together. The Lions need to clean house in their scouting department. They have some talent, but three players cannot win you a game.
In the past three years, the Lions have the worst draft ever. That is on scouts and the GM. They have drafted the likes of Titus Young, Jahvid Best, and Mikel Leshoure. If you look at what Alonzo Highsmith has done for the Packers it would blow your mind. The Packers scouts have a team that consists of 50 players that are home grown. They never played for any other team than the Packers. That is something special, and something the Lions need. I am telling you Alonzo Highsmith is your guy in D-Town. He will get them back to the playoffs, the coach is not the problem.
