NFL DRAFT DIAMONDS

Roster Watch: Temple, Rutgers, Villanova

Temple:

Team runs a base 4-3 defense anchored by two senior, 300 pound, interior lineman Kamal Johnson and Levi Brown. Single back, three receiver offense. Offensive line gave up 1 sack at Notre Dame and 3 sacks versus Houston. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Matakevich is a main player of focus. He earned second team All-Big East honors in 2012, as well as defensive rookie of the year.

Players of interest:

  • WLB #8 Tyler Matakevich, Sophomore, 6’1’’, 230, 2012 Second Team All-Big East, 2012 DROY
  • DT Kamal Johnson #93, Senior, 6’4’’, 310
  • P Paul Layton #15, Senior, 6’1’’, 215

Rutgers:

The Scarlet Knights run a 4-3 defense lead by co-captains DL Jamil and SLB Jamal Merrel. There is still a large veteran presence in the defense with 9 senior starters. The linebacking corps is by far the youngest with starting SLB Jamal Merrell being the only senior starter there. Rutgers runs a base Power I offense headlined by RB Paul James and WR Brandon Coleman. The Rutgers offensive line is very solid with guards Antwan Lowery and Kaleb Johnson earning 2012 first and second team ALL-Big East, respectively. However, Lowery has not started the first two games of the season suffered in early August. Sophomore Chris Muller has filled in nicely and the Rutgers O-Line as a whole has given up only 3 sacks so far this season, as well as paved the way for Paul James, who had a 191 yard performance at Fresno State, and a 121 yard, 3 touchdown performance versus Norfolk State.

Jamal Merrell, Antwan Lowery, and WR Brandon Coleman are my main players of focus. Jamal Merrell has not made a huge impact on the stat line, however, he is getting consistent pressure on the QB, and getting a lot of looks in coverage due to Fresno State’s spread offense. Additionally, Merrell was listed on the 2013 Bednarick and Butkus Award Watch lists for best defensive player, and best linebacker, respectively. Brandon Coleman is a highly regarded receiver prospect from his combination of speed and size. He also earned second team All-Big East honors in 2012 as a sophomore.

Villanova

The Wildcats run a base 3-3-5 defense headlined by Defensive Lineman Antoine Lewis and Rakim Cox, who both earned first team All-CAA honors in 2012. Their base offense is single back, 3 wide receivers run by dual threat QB John Robertson, who passed and rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2012.

NT Antoine Lewis and C/G Dan Shirey are my main player of focus from this Villanova squad. In addition to first team honors in 2012, Lewis also earned third team All-CAA honors in 2010. This year, Lewis was named a team captain of the Villanova defense, as well as being named to the 2013 preseason Buck Buchanan Watch list, which is given to the top defensive player in FCS football. Lewis is also listed as a pre-season Third Team All-FCS defensive lineman by Phil Steele.

Shirey is returning from a medical redshirt year in 2012. Before his injury, Shirey earned third team All-CAA in 2010 and first team All-CAA in 2011. In 2013, he is listed as a pre-season Second Team All-FCS offensive lineman by Phil Steele
