Packers sign former New York Jet running back Joe McKnight

In a deep battle at the running back position the Green Bay Packers add another competing piece. Today Joe McKnight said via twitter that he was signed by the Packers.  This is probably not the best news for running back James Starks.  Starks who has had several good seasons in the NFL, is about out in Green Bay.  It’s another indication of the Packers’ disappointment in fourth-round pick Johnathan Franklin.

Eddie Lacy is an every-down back and is not threatened by this signing, but it could mean the end for James Starks. I think that McKnight will take over the special teams roles for the Packers which is great, because the team was getting desperate to fill the spot. Although he’s capable of helping Green Bay’s special teams, McKnight has very little fantasy football appeal with the Packers.

Update: Mike Garofolo is now reporting that McKnight only had a workout
