Former Buffalo Bills coach is prospering in Denver with Peyton Manning

Former Buffalo Bills wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert calls his weapons in Denver “the five-10 club.’’ It’s exclusive to be sure, and beyond having a future Hall of Famer at quarterback, it makes the Broncos’ offense tough to decode. It has also made the battle on the Broncos’ practice field just to get involved in some way one that has helped everyone.

“The hardest thing to do here is get on the field,’’ Tolbert said of the Broncos’ game day choices.

In Buffalo, Tolbert helped wide receiver Lee Evans become one of the most productive receivers in Bills history. Evans led all NFL rookies in 2004 with nine touchdown receptions and a 17.6-yard average per catch. After finishing second in the NFL with seven receptions for 40-plus yards in 2005, Evans continued to improve under Tolbert in 2006, amassing a team-record 265 yards receiving on 11 catches with two touchdowns in Week 11.

Tolbert now is in the record books, because the Broncos have, count ‘em, five players who finished the regular season with at least 10 touchdowns. Five. No other team in league history has had more than three, because Peyton Manning is for real.

It is pretty amazing to think of all the people that leave the Buffalo Bills organization and prosper, they have good pieces but sometimes let the wrong one’s go.
