Draft Diamonds Spotlight Interview: William “Boss” Wright, OG/OC, West Georgia

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?
During Spring of my Junior year 21 schools came to visit and I had an early offer from Tenneessee State. Unfortunately I moved to Georgia my senior year and lost all D1 interest.

How did you come to make your college decision?
I chose West Georgia because of a couple reasons. First of all I felt welcomed, wanted, and got a family vibe. The school is great and campus is booming. Our facilities are amongst the top in the nation, not just Division II.

Where are you training, and what are your goals for pro day/combines?
I’m training with Chip Smith Performance Systems in Norcross, Ga. My goal for my pro day is to showcase my talents, strength, and athletic ability. And most of all have fun while doing it. I won’t let the pressure build up or get to me because I know I’m prepared to do my best.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
During my senior season and shortly after I’ve meet with a combined seven teams. Either face to face conversation or over the phone. Humbling experience. The feed back from the scouts is great. They strongly believe that I can play pro ball and be productive. Everyone my agent or I have spoken to will want me to play center which wouldn’t be a problem because I have experience under my belt at center.

At your position, what separates you from the others?
I believe my smarts, preparation, and relentless motor excels me past my competition. Going into my senior year I began to break down game film of my opponent and myself on my own. Knowing their tendencies and picking up on minor stance adjustments helps me tremendously. I believe as a player if you know you’re assignment and also know what your opponent intends to do the game is so much easier. I also like to be physical from the first snap. By letting my opponent know that he’s going to have a long day, I’ve won the mental bat tael because he now focuses on me instead of his assignment.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?
When breaking down film I first watch the defensive line’s alignment and assignment. After I watch every lineman’s technique or key in on stance adjustments that will alert me for an inside move, speed rush, stunt or any games they’d like to play. I then key on the linebackers to see if they are fast flowing or readers.

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?
I’d definitely give it to Ethan Westbrooks of West Texas A&M. Not only Ethan but their linebacking core also.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
I’d like to think that I have my own game but I certainly mix things up from guys I’ve watched on Sundays and even Saturdays. I love the 49s entire offensive line. Their technique and scheme is something similar to watch my OL coach Chase Harp taught at UWG. I also like watching Chance Warmack while at BAMA.

What system fits your style of play the best?
Honestly it does not matter. I can run block and pass set. Whatever systems I’m fortunate to be placed in I’ll adjust, get coached up, and produce on Sundays.

What is your biggest strength?
Once again I believe my preparation and smarts.

What is your biggest weakness?
Getting a tad bit too emotional during games.

If I were a GM and gave you a minute to sell yourself, what would you say?
It’s not about the money or the fame. Playing in the league gives me a chance to better myself and communities around by participating and excelling in what is known as a game. But for those who partake in this game understand it’s life. A lot of dedication, sacrifice, blood, sweat, and tears have poured out of me to have this opportunity and I won’t fail myself, my families last name, or my team!

Growing up, who was your role model?
My immediate family. I was fortunate enough to have both parents, my older sister and granny all in the same house and they have helped me tremendously. On and off the field.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
My favorite team is the Miami Dolphins and my favorite player currently is Joe Staley. His footwork, technique and toughness amazes me.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?
Dr. Martin Luther King. Christopher Wallace. Kevin Hart.

What would you buy with your first NFL paycheck?
I’d buy moms a nice home and help pay off some bills.
