NFL Draft Diamonds Spotlight Interview: Joseph Dienye, DE, Bethel
How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?

There were several schools that recruited me out of high school but honestly I do not remember the exact number. I just remember how excited I was when the recruiting process began because I knew that I was going to get the opportunity to play college football.
How did you come to make your college decision?

I chose Bethel University because it was the perfect fit for me. I really liked the coaching staff and the campus. I also wanted to get away from home so I could get the college experience, make new friends, and grow as a man and Bethel was over three hours away from my hometown.

Where are you training, and what are your goals for pro day/combines?

Currently, I am training in several different locations throughout Tennessee depending on what specific skill I am focusing on. My goal for the combine is to just put up the numbers that I have been in my training. If I do this I am confident that I will turn some heads and get a shot with an NFL team.
Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?

Yes, I have met with or been contacted by several NFL teams. They have told me that they really like the way I play and how I handle myself character wise on and off the field. A couple of them have told me that if I put up good numbers at the combine they will give me a shot.

At your position, what separates you from the others?

I separate myself from others at my position by my work ethic. I guarantee you that no one will work harder than me on or off the field. I have been blessed with many physical gifts but my motor, leadership, and determination are what give me the edge over my competition on game day.
Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?

The little things that give a lineman away. From his fingertips, to is he sitting back or leaning forward slightly, how are his hands, which pass rush moves does he struggle to defend.

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?

Probably my former teammate Michael Jasper of the Carolina Panthers, his size and the speed he has is unmatched.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?

Tamba Hali.

What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?

Fortunately, I really have not had what I would consider to be any big obstacles in my life. I am a very positive person and try to label things not as obstacles but as opportunities, but if I had to name something I would say probably my freshman year at Bethel. It was really tough at first to be away from home and to not know anyone but I quickly made friends and just enjoyed my time there.

What system fits your style of play the best?

Probably a 4-3 Defense with me at Defensive End, or a 3-4 Defense with me at Outside Linebacker.

What is your biggest strength?

My speed for my position.

What is your biggest weakness?

In college my weight was probably my biggest weakness. I played several different positions and sometimes my weight was not correct for the position I was playing.

If I were a GM and gave you a minute to sell yourself, what would you say?

I would tell them 3 things

1. I will be the hardest working player on your team.

2. You will be proud of me on and off the field.

3. You will not regret it if I get this chance.

Growing up, who was your role model?

Probably my grandfather Smith Gilbert, he’s so strong and a great man of God. He’s one of those people that you feel like knows everything about everything.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?

I actually didn’t really have a favorite team. I loved football so much that I followed them all. However, I always seemed to pull for the underdog team when I was watching the games. No doubt Jevon Kearse was my favorite player growing up because I loved the way he played. Now my favorite player is Tamba Hali, his pass rush moves are second to none, I try to mimic them.
If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?

Jevon Kearse, Kobe Bryant, and Warren Buffett.

What would you buy with your first NFL paycheck?

Nothing. I would put my first NFL paycheck in the bank. Once I was able to save some money up I would help out a few of my family members who have some needs. I can’t think of anything that would make me happier than to be able to help them out.
