NFL Draft Diamonds Spotlight Interview: Brandon Wicks, DB, Murray State


Murray State has alot of talent on deck, and Wicks, along with fellow DB Darian Yahyavi, is a standout. Wicks doesn’t possess top-end size, but is active, instinctual, and a high-effort player. Here is our prospect interview with Brandon.

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?
I had offers from Memphis and UAB, and handful of other small schools.

How did you come to make your college decision?
I picked Murray State because a new coaching staff was coming in so I saw that as a chance for me to play early. and they were one of the teams that kept in contact with me throughout the recruiting process

Where are you training, and what are your goals for pro day/combines?
I’m training at my school to use our facilities. My goals for me are to beat some of the top times at the last year combine for my position

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
I haven’t really talked to any but they have come and gotten film on me

At your position, what separates you from the others?
I do a good job of recognizing plays, great tackler, and I’m a really good special teams player.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?
How a receiver comes out of their breaks, how often does the qb try and look off the DB’s

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?
EJ Manuel from Florida State. He’s just a really smart QB.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
Ryan Clark. He’s just always flying around the field and making plays. I think I do a good job of that.

What system fits your style of play the best?
4-3, any team that plays a lot with their safeties in the box.

What is your biggest strength?
Tackling and play recognition, I do a good job of covering also.

What is your biggest weakness?
Sometimes I’m to aggressive coming down to the run, so I’ve taken bad angles a couple of times.

If I were a GM and gave you a minute to sell yourself, what would you say?
I’m a physical player and I feel like I can make a contribution to the team. I’m a fast learner, no off the field problems, and I will play any position that is needed.

Growing up, who was your role model?
My mom, she was always able to take care of our family no matter what

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
My favorite team was the Broncos. They were the best team in the NFL when I started watching football so I kinda stuck with them since I was little. I’m a big fan of Eric Weddle, I love how he plays the safety position.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?
My grandma, Obama, and Megan Good

What would you buy with your first NFL paycheck?
Id probably get both my parents something that they always wanted.
