AsaDraft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Asa Watson, TE, North Carolina State

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?
Around 10-15 teams
Where did you choose and why?

I chose N.C. State because I felt like it was the best fit for me. I loved the school, the facilities, the city of Raleigh, and really felt comfortable with the team.

What were your goals for your senior year?

Coming into my senior year I wanted to make the all-conference team and win a championship, but really I just wanted to be a leader for my team, as well as someone the younger guys could look up to.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?

I’ve met with a good amount of scouts. Most of the meetings are just to get a feel of who I am as a person and what kind of player I am. Along with their evaluation of me on the field, they’ll be able to make a decision on whether I fit their team or not.

At your position, what separates you from the others?

I really try to strain to the whistle and out work my opponent.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?

First, I look at the overall defense to see what kind of fronts, coverages, and blitzes they run. Then, I look to see which players stand out the most on film, especially those at the defensive end and linebacker positions. From there, I’ll take notes on individual players and try to find their strengths and weaknesses.

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?

Bjoern Werner from Florida State had to be the strongest guy I ever went up against.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?

I guess it would have to be my brother, Benjamin. We play the same position, so he’s been able to give me a lot of advice from his own experience.

What system fits your style of play the best?

I’m not too particular on offensive schemes. Any system that has me blocking and catching is fine with me.

What is your biggest strength?

I’m very committed to what I do.

What is your biggest weakness?

I’m very critical of myself.

If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?

I work hard, I’m disciplined, and I believe I can help make your team better.

Growing up, who was your role model?

I always looked up to my brother a lot. Wanting to be like him was a big part of why I started playing football.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?

I liked Rams as a kid, but mainly because I liked their helmets. Coincidentally, my wife’s dad was playing for them at that time.

What was the most tragic event that ever happened in your life and how did you overcome it?

I lost a good friend of mine in a boating accident a couple years ago. It was tough because it happened so fast, but reminiscing with his friends about the good times helped us all to heal.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?

Nat King Cole, Darius Rucker, and my wife.

With your first paycheck what would you buy?

I’d probably just buy a place to live near my new team.
