Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton could hang up his cleats

Today in a question and answers session with Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, a fan asked about Kyle Orton and if the Cowboys would be looking for a Quarterback in the draft. Archer’s answer makes it sound like Orton could be done with football.

@toddarcher: I’m assuming this scenario comes up in the middle of the preseason games and not, say, during the organized team activities. So let’s go with the assumption. It would be considered a post-June 1 cut, so the Cowboys would save $3.25 million against the cap in 2014, but Orton would count $2.254 million against the cap in 2015. Since the final two years of Orton’s deal void after this season, he is set to count $2.254 million against the cap next year anyway. The same numbers would hold true if the Cowboys were able to trade Orton. If the Cowboys cut Orton before June 1, they would save about $900,000. But I’ll throw this out there: I’m still not convinced Orton wants to play in 2014, despite what came out of the owners meetings. Let’s see if he shows up to the offseason program next week.

If Orton does retire, the Cowboys are going to need a quarterback early. I would expect Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round if he falls.
