Bucs’ TE Timothy Wright Could Start Week 6

With the placement of Nate Byham on the injured reserve today, the only Tight End’s on the Buccaneers roster are Tom Crabtree, who has been nursing a knee injury through the first four weeks of the NFL season and undrafted rookie Timothy Wright. Pending the acquisition of a new tight end, Wright has the inside track to making his first start of the season in two weeks against the Philadelphia Eagles. I commented in earlier articles about the role and value that the coaching staff has for Wright and his 5 catch, 41 yards performance against the Cardinals Sunday indicates that he is one of Mike Glennon’s most reliable targets. The Buccaneers have made a slew of transactions that currently leave two roster spots vacant, which leads me to speculate that Mark Dominik is either in the works for a players-for-player deal for newly alienated quarterback Josh Freeman, or that the Buccaneers are simply scouting the free agent market for a tight end that fits their offense.

If Wright ends up sneaking into the starting tight end spot, he holds fantasy value in deeper leagues due to his 6 targets from Glennon versus Arizona. Wright could also be plugged as a spot starter  in a favorable matchup against the Eagle’s pass defense, which is second to last in yards per game allowed (325) and tied for second most passing touchdowns allowed (9). Wright could be a solid fill in for Tony Gonzalez, or Charles Clay, who are both on a bye week 6.
