Tyree Wilson is regarded as a likely top-five or ten pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. We break down the skillset he brings to the table here.

Tyree Wilson is one of the bigger hit or miss prospects in this draft class. He has the size, power, and athleticism combo to develop into an edge rusher in the NFL. But on the other hand he hasn’t produced like a top five or ten pick.

The scouting report is also available in a video format here. I strongly encourage everyone to watch that video as it allows you to visualize everything I discuss in this scouting report.

Strengths

  • Power
    • Bull Rush/Power Pass Rushes
      • Powerful bull rush – amongst the best in class and very good by NFL standards, can overpower most OL.
      • His power is apparent – something he’ll be able to win with even against NFL OTs.
      • Certainly is the most effective way he won pass rushes.
      • Even when he doesn’t even necessarily get past the OL, the push he creates in the pocket can still affect the play.
    • Run Game
      • Utilizes his power/strength when taking on blocks in the run game as well.
      • Many examples on his tape of him using his power to blow up or effect run plays.
  • Versatility
    • Can line up in various spots along a defensive line.
    • With his size at 6-foot-6, 275 pounds & power he can take on guards and win as he did it consistently at Texas Tech.
    • Snap alignment counts in his career: 1,037 outside tackle, 491 over tackle, and 126 B-Gap
  • Athleticism
    • Wilson is a rare type of athlete – not many players who can move the way that he does at 6-foot-6, 275 pounds.
    • Mostly won with power, but did show an ability to win around outside with speed and by turning corner & flipping his hips.
    • Not something he’s super comfortable doing just yet, but something he can develop more in the NFL.

Weaknesses

  • Production
    • Took a while to become a productive player in college – apart of 2018 high school recruiting class, so this was his fifth year in college.
    • Even when he did become productive, it wasn’t to the extent that you may expect out of a top five pick.
    • Had a 74.9 PFF grade in 2022 was his highest, which is 98th out of 522 qualified edge defenders.
    • Move is expected out of a potential top five/ten pick.
  • Polish as a pass rusher
    • Relies a lot on his rare physical tools to win pass rushes.
    • Has developed technically over time in his college career, but question is if he’s developed technically enough to win consistently in the NFL.
    • NFL OTs are very athletic & powerful as well, so he won’t be able to rely on those things to the same degree.

Final Evaluation

Pos Rank: ED2

Projection: Top 15 Pick

I’m not quite as high on Tyree Wilson as some analysts and the NFL likely will be.  However, he certainly has a lot of upside with his physical tools, so he’s still a top 15 prospect in this class for me.
