What are your favorite things about playing football for Illinois State?

My favorite things about playing football for Illinois State would have to be the different opportunities of growth, learning different schemes/ techniques, and the culture.

If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day who and why?

If I could hang out with any football player it would be Troy Polamalu. He played on pure instinct and knowledge which allowed him to play the game at a very high speed. I’d love to hear him breakdown film.

What type of energy do you bring onto the football field?

The type of energy I bring when I step on the field is dominant. I want my presence felt every play.

What sets you apart from other defensive backs?

Football IQ and technique.

What should we know about Sy Dabney the person?

I’m a hard worker, natural born leader, focused and dedicated to my craft. I’m also giving out wins in Warzone or Madden easy.

What are your favorite moments from your football life?

Getting 3 rings 3 years in a row in high school, getting my first INT, training in Denver and learning from Von Miller and Justin Simmons and one versus one’s with KJ Hamler and Jerry Jeudy.

What is your favorite coverage and why?

I like playing in the middle of the field. I feel like it gives me free range and the ability to make plays all across the field.

What do you think are the keys to success on the football field?

I think the keys to success on the football field start with how you prep off the football field.

How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?

I attack challenges head on, growing up that’s how it’s always been. Life has constant obstacles that you have to get over and grow from. On the field mistakes are much smaller so you have to adjust accordingly and trust the other 10 guys on the field with you.

What would a team get in a player like you?

Any team that picks me will get more than what they wanted. A hardworking, competitive, intelligent, coachable and adaptable player who goes above and beyond to succeed.

What are you looking forward to in your upcoming season?

Looking forward to the growth that myself and my team will have this year. As football players we strive to get at least 1% better everyday. I think this upcoming season will allow me to get closer to perfecting my craft.

Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?

The most underrated player I’ve played with is KJ Hamler. I think a lot of people underestimate him because of his size but his heart and love for the game is amazing. The NFL should watch out for him this year.
