What sets you apart from other linebackers?

I would say the number one thing that sets me apart from other linebackers is my film study. My ability to watch and process film throughout the week scouting our opponent has helped me be the most prepared I can be on game day. When we get out on the field, I can dissect formations and have a good idea of what the offense is running before the ball is snapped.

What do you think are the keys to success on the football field?

The keys to success on the football field are hard work, preparation, and mindset. Having a high motor and work ethic are two things I pride myself on during games and have helped me gain success on the field over the past few years. I also prepare and visualize myself making plays throughout the week before the game, so I am already prepared for the challenges that come on game day.

What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?

Growing up my family, specifically my father, was a very big football fan and got me into the sport at a young age. He was also my football coach up until I graduated from high school, so having him around with his vast knowledge of the game, and his passion for it allowed me to develop a love for it growing up.

What type of energy do you bring onto the football field?

I bring a violent, yet under control level of energy on game days. I understand that football is a violent sport, but also understand that you need to be able to harness that physicality in ways that help you make plays, so I make sure that before a game, I mentally focus on the task at hand, and make sure to not let my emotions get the best of me.

If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?

I would choose Luke Kuechly. After watching him growing up and also watching how he studied tape before games, I try to model my play after his. He talked about not being nervous before games because he was already prepared after his preparation before the week, and if he was nervous, he would simply look back at his notes to calm him down. I like to take aspects of his game and try to replicate them throughout the week, to ensure I can be the most successful player possible on saturdays.

How do you prepare for games?

At the beginning of the week, I will look over our scouting report for the opponent and focus on the main formations and tendencies that we have seen in the past few weeks, I will then look at the main players I will be going up against in 1 on 1 situations, and focus on their strengths and weaknesses, and see if there are some things I can exploit within their technique. On game day, I like to look over my notes once or twice before we go out to warm up, and then lock in with some music and focus on getting warmed up for the game.

Junior highlights from Trevor Nowaske Junior season

What should we know about Trevor Nowaske the person?

When it comes to me as a person, I pride myself on being the hardest worker, no matter the task. I am a competitive person, and do not back down from competition, which has allowed me to excel with football and my academics, as I am currently pursuing my Masters in Business Administration.

What is your favorite defensive scheme and why?

Defensive fronts I would go with a traditional 4-3. I think this front allows for the linebackers to get the most downhill action on run plays, and also helps the linebackers have the ability to play the run, and the pass depending on the down and distance. In terms of coverage I enjoyed being put in nickel packages in the past season, and being in man to man coverage situations. This has given me the ability to show off my coverage ability, and show off my athleticism on the field.

How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?

Whenever I get faced with adversity, I like to take a step back from the situation and assess my emotions, how I am handling the situation, and a plan I can put in place to make sure I handle the challenge correctly. Over the years I have started to document certain challenges and issues that have arisen, and write out step by step plans to deal with the challenge at hand.

What would a team get in a player like you?

They would get someone that is not only an exceptional athlete on the field, but also someone who is a student of the game. Football requires physical, and mental strength, and my ability to stay positive in tough situations, and dissect offensive tendencies has allowed me to put myself in the position that I am in today, which I believe came from hard work and sacrifice over the years.

What are you looking forward to in your upcoming season?

I am looking forward to finishing my college career out with teammates who I know have been putting everything into this final season of football at SVSU. No matter what happens at the end of the season, me and my teammates know that we have put everything into it, whether it was early morning 5am workouts, countless hours in the film room studying film, or getting treatment in the training room to insure our bodies were ready for the game, we can be at peace at the end of the journey knowing that we left it all on the field, having no regrets.
