Western Illinois linebacker Hunter Mason dies after battle with brain cancer at the age of 22

We are sad to report that WIU standout linebacker Hunter Mason lost his battle with brain cancer at the age of 22.

Western Illinois is mourning the loss of former standout linebacker Hunter Mason. The 22-year-old football player for the Leathernecks passed away last week after a serious battle with brain cancer.

Mason passed away at his home in Missouri, according to reports. He was receiving care for Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Mason played for WIU since 2018, and appeared in 29 games with 15 starts. He racked up 9 career sacks, 56 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 1 fumble forced and 1 recovered. He was an honorable mention linebacker in the Missouri Valley Football Conferences, one of the best conferences in the FCS.

Mason did graduate from WIU in just three years. He was pursuing his masters degree in Sports Management.

The school released this tweet in honor the hard hitting linebacker.
