Army running back/full back Sandon McCoy is a beast. The star back recently sat down with NFL Draft Diamonds owner Damond Talbot.
  • Name: Sandon McCoy
  • Position: RB/FB
  • College: United Stated Military Academy (ARMY)
  • Height: 5’11
  • Weight: 216

Right now, people are not talking about you the way I feel they should. Do you feel you are an underdog?

  • Yes, for a very few reasons, I do feel like an underdog but, in this position, I have the attitude of, “nobody cares, work harder”. I believe that a lot of professional sports organizations sometimes overlook the talent Army has in collegiate athletics. Myself and my peers that attend the United States Military Academy have chosen a different path to a college education. However, the division 1 sports program at Army has a lot of athletes that can play at the professional level.

What is one thing that NFL teams should know about you?

  • Playing B-back in the triple-option offense at Army allowed me to develop as both a running back and a full-back. This gave me the skill of an extremely hard runner and an explosive blocker.

If you could donate to one cause in the world, what would it be?

  • I would donate to Water Wells for Africa; this is a nonprofit organization that brings clean water to countries in Africa. As a child, I always wanted to be a part of a non-profit organization that could bring clean water to those in need.

Who was your childhood hero?

  • My childhood hero is my grandfather, he taught me what hard work looks like at a very young age. He was my mentor as child growing up and has had an impactful influence on my life to this current day.

Who is the most underrated teammate in your locker room at your school?

  • Artice Hobbs, this teammate of mine has always had the blue collard worker mentality. On the field, he has been able to work around different positions such as a slotback or wide receiver, always contributing to the team success.
Meet Army running back Sandon McCoy

What is your biggest pet peeve?

  • My biggest pet peeve is negative energy, and laziness.

Overcoming adversity is what defines character, what was the hardest moment in your life to overcome?

  • I believe that overcoming adversity has become a part of my character for many reasons such as attending the United States Military Academy. Throughout my 47-month journey, the Academy has placed me in situations that were challenging. Whether its balancing West Point’s 20 credit hour rigorous academic schedule, on top of football, military training and, a leadership role in the Corps of Cadets as the Football Team Captain. I have had to overcome a tremendous amount of adversity throughout my career as a Cadet which has developed my character over time.

Tell me something about your school and why it is so special to Sandon McCoy?

  • It is the world’s supreme character development institution and I whole heartily agree. Throughout my four years of attending my character has developed for the best and has revealed a lot of improved qualities that I can own.

What is your favorite snack food?

  •  My favorite snack is ramen noodles.

The NFL Draft is quickly approaching, if you could sell yourself in one sentence what would you say?

  • I am ready to join any of the 32 NFL teams and work extremely hard to contribute to the success, I know I can give.

If you could compare your play to one player in the NFL who would it be?

  • I would compare my level of play to Frank Gore. Gore is a hard nose straight north and south running back. His ability to break through the line of scrimmage and pick up 7+ hard yards breaking multiple tackles or with defenders grabbing on him. I believe his running style makes him more of a durable running-back which is why he has had such a long career as a running back in the NFL. His mentality and technique he runs with I believe will directly reflect my running ability in the NFL.

If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive, who would it be and why?

  1. Kobe Bryant, I have studied and learned to utilize his Mamba Mentality. I would love to pick his brain about the epitome of his work ethic and how to believe in yourself to the level where you are untouchable and unstoppable. I would also love to ask him how he developed his game along with serving a significant role as a family member simultaneously.
  2. Elon Musk, because he is the future of technology in the world. He is leading the first private space exploration program and already leads one of the first major electronic car companies. I personally think he will be a world leader in innovation and technology in the coming years.
  3. Abraham Lincoln because he epitomizes choosing the harder right over the easier wrong; his decision to free the slaves challenged the status quo of the entire country which demonstrated his morals and courage to uphold his personal values.
