3 Week 1 Sleepers

  1. James Robinson/ RB/ Jacksonville Jaguars: He is an undrafted rookie from Illinois State and to be honest I was shocked he went undrafted. He landed in Jacksonville and has been an unexpected yet pleasant surprise. He dominated at the FCS level and put on an absolute show at the East-West Shrine Game. Either Robinson or Devine Ozigbo will emerge and I’m betting on Robinson just like in my team preview.
  2. Tyrod Taylor/ QB/ LA Chargers: The Bengals allowed the most rushing yards to QBs last season and it will be interesting to see if the Chargers try to exploit that with Taylor. Also, it is a late afternoon start for the Chargers as they are traveling east; that should ease the time difference issues for their bodies and pregame routine.
  3. Kendrick Bourne/ WR/ San Francisco 49ers: This one is injury dependent so pay attention to the status of both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Ayiuk. If one of them is out cool, but if both sit sign me up for some Kendrick Bourne. Jimmy G lit up Arizona twice last season so it isn’t nuts to think Jimmy G could come out hot to start the season. And remember, George Kittle can only catch so many balls in one game.

3 Week 1 Fades

  1. Melvin Gordon/ RB/ Denver Broncos: Gordon’s first game for the Mile High City is a tough matchup with Tennessee and because of that he may not find a groove. Plus, Phillip Lindsay is still around. Lindsay has always been productive and I am not sold on Gordon being the guy or even out-touching Lindsay on a weekly basis.
  2. Le’Veon Bell/ RB/ New York Jets: Adam Gase will sign Frank Gore to a contract anytime he is given the chance. Gore is a football miracle as he is 37-years-old and still getting meaningful work as an NFL RB. That just doesn’t happen. While the individual talent of Bell is undeniable it is how he fits with Gase. Gase will run his team the way he wants and Gore on the roster expects him to get at least one-third of the team carries. So proceed with caution when it comes to Bell.
  3. AJ Green/ WR/ Cincinnati Bengals: Green has missed a lot of time recently due to injury. As Green returns, he finds himself in a new situation where he isn’t guaranteed to get all the targets of #1 overall pick Joe Burrow. Burrow and Tyler Boyd have been rumored to have a nice connection going and some reports seem to suggest a nice red zone relationship was taking form between Auden Tate and Joe Burrow. Sprinkle in an improved offensive line with a new Joe Mixon contract and you can see how Cincy is no longer AJ Green’s team. There is still a role for him but not Week 1 against the Chargers.
