2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor

By Lijah Spencer (@tweaked74)

Continuing with the Defensive End position tonight we look at a player who became a bit of an internet sensation when a picture of him appeared on the jumbotron at a bowl game. At 6’9 he looks every bit the part of an intimidator, here are my notes:

Shawn Oakman. 6’9. 280 lbs. DE. Baylor

The Positives

1) Has great size

2) Plays with good power

3) Has decent agility for a player of his size

The Negatives

1) Does not have many pass rush moves in his “tool box”.

2) Too often gets pushed out of the play

3) Does not have the lateral quickness needed to react to a RB headed to his side

4) Off the field concerns?

Shawn Oakman is a big man standing at 6’9 and 280 lbs who plays with good power, and has good speed and agility for his size. He does not however use multiple pass rush moves, and tries to beat his blocker with his power instead, which limits his effectiveness. Oakman does not have the lateral quickness required to react to a RB who runs towards his side, and too often gets pushed away from the play. There are also some off the field questions as he was kicked out of Penn St for “a violation of rules”. Oakman strikes me as a player who because of his size has always been able to dominate lesser players, thus never perfecting his craft. His size and athleticism will get him looks, but if he wants to be a high draft pick he will need to produce more, and show development this season.
