2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Braxton Deaver,TE, Duke

Continuing with the Tight End position we look at a player who is listed as a player on the watch list, but for reasons I will spell out later I am skeptical on his likelihood of being drafted. Here are my notes:

Braxton Deaver. 6’5. 245 lbs. TE. Duke. Senior

The Positives

1) Deaver has good speed

2) Shows good effort in both run and pass blocking

3) Miller runs good routes

The Negatives

1) He has an extensive injury history.

2) Has limited playing experience due to injuries

Braxton Deaver is a Tight End with good size and speed. He runs good routes and has decent catching ability. He is a good blocker in both the run and the passing game. Deaver however has a very extensive injury history which has caused him to miss actually morst of his college career. He has torn the ACL in both knees, in total he has had four knee surgeries, anda surgery on his right thumb. Braxton Deaver has the size and the talent to be an interesting prospect at the NFL level, and if he plays this season and plays well, he may well get a look from NFL people. The NFL however puts all of their prospects through a rigorous medical exam, and I’m not sure how Deaver could pass that having had three ACL injuries already in his career. The chances of reinjuring your ACL goes up greatly after the first tear, and it goes up even higher after the second, but three..that just isn’t a good sign. Deaver seems like a good kid, he is attending his 6th year at Duke to try and complete this season and by all accounts he is working extremely hard to come back successfully. Sadly, I just can’t imagine An NFL team taking a risk and drafting a player with this kind of injury history.
