Former draft bust Ryan Leaf is out of jail…. For now

Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf’s legal troubles over the last five years have been pretty well documented. He was hit with a series of drug-related charges in Texas back in 2009. And ever since then, he’s been dealing with issues pertaining to prescription drugs. Well he has been released from Montana jail according to Complex.

Most recently, Leaf—the No. 2 overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft—was arrested in March 2012 for breaking into a home in Great Falls, Mont. and stealing a bunch of pills. And he was sentenced to do seven years in jail for the crime. But yesterday afternoon, Leaf was released from a Montana prison, and while he will have to spend the next few years checking in with probation and parole officers, he’s a free man.

At least, he’s a free man for now. Leaf is no longer required to serve any jail time in Montana. But because of the charges that he received in Texas in 2009, he was put on probation for ten years. So theoretically, the state of Texas could decide to extradite Leaf if they want and throw him in jail there.
