Chargers legend Lance Alworth is happy for Antonio Gates

gatesWith a 31-yard, over-the-shoulder catch with a defender draped on him, Gates became the Chargers’ all-time leader in receiving yards, passing Hall of Famer Lance Alworth. That catch was huge for the Chargers and Antonio Gates. It truly defined his career because it was an acrobatic reception.  Gates made an extremely athletic play to break the mark that was in the Franchise Record Books for almost 45 years. Alworth caught his final pass for the Chargers in 1970, and his 9,584 yards, and was happy that Antonio Gates was the player that broke the mark according to U-T San Diego.

“If anyone was to break the record,” Alworth told the U-T last week, “he’s the one who should do it.”

Already the franchise’s leader in receptions and touchdowns, Gates has long seemed on an inevitable march toward this mark. The bigger question is who will be the guy that matches Gates record?
