Draft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Paul Layton, P, Temple 

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?

I was recruited by 4 Patriot League and Ivy League Schools as a QB. But got strong interest from about 5 FCS scholarship teams to punt/kick as well as 4 FBS schools that wanted me to walk on. 

Where did you choose and why?

I ultimately chose the University at Albany because they were the only one to offer a full ride and I liked their business school. After I got my undergraduate degree, I went on to Temple University to do my graduate degree and play my last season. 

What were your goals for your senior year?

To make All-Conference and have a net punting avg of 40 yards.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?

Yes. They aren’t giving much info away other than they’ve talked to people about me and have liked what they’ve heard.

At your position, what separates you from the others?

I think the best part of my game is my directional punting which is crucial in the NFL. 

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?

I usually just watch myself and my technique, the size of my steps and my ball drop.

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?

I don’t go against people one on one at my position but the player who got the best of us last season was Teddy Bridgewater. 

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?

Ryan Quigley, NY Jets.

What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?

The toughest decision I ever had to make was deciding about my senior year of eligibility. I needed to decided to stay at Albany where I loved the team but the grad programs weren’t for me or try to transfer to a new team for one season and grad school. I overcame it by seeking advice from many and taking the time to truly find out what I wanted for myself.

What system fits your style of play the best?

Directional punting system. 

What is your biggest strength?

Pinning the opposition deep.

What is your biggest weakness?

I can improve consistency. 

If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?

I’ve proven myself in extremely cold/windy weather and my strength is directional punting which is what you need to contain the great NFL returners.

Growing up, who was your role model?

My brother. He is the hardest worker I’ve ever met.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?

Pittsburgh Steelers, Troy Polamalu is my favorite because he’s so aggressive and makes such an impact when he is in the game.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?

Vince Lombardi, Steve Jobs and Will Ferrell

With your first paycheck what would you buy?

New suits.
